KAMPALA, UGANDA - Rotary International has joined the ever growing number of nature conservationists by allowing the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to use its 1.3 million worldwide memberships as ambassadors of nature conservation.
This follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between UWA and Rotary International President Ray Klinginsmith in Kampala recently during the Rotary International 86th Assembly and conference.
This year's annual conference was hosted by District 9002 which comprises Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Eritrea.
The conference sits annually to discuss and review the charity's activities and elect its leaders.  Next year's conference will be hosted in Nairobi, Kenya.
Dr. Andrew Seguya, the acting Executive Director of UWA said that the partnership between Rotary International and wildlife authority that started way back in 2009 during the Friend a Gorilla campaign is very significant as it has provided a rare opportunity for conservation and tourism promotion.
Through the partnership, the Uganda tourism regulator expects members of the international charity to each contribute a dollar towards its conservation efforts which if successful, will enable Uganda wildlife authority (UWA) bag close to Shs3 trillion.
The Rotarians are on record to have actively participated in the Friend a Gorilla campaign launched in 2009, with a number of them visiting Bwindi Impenetrable National Park where they tracked and befriended gorillas.
Recently, Rotarians donated a number of wheel chairs which were given to UWA staff who have suffered impairment in the course of executing UWA activities and have also invited the UWA officers to participate in the events like the inter-city conference held in Masaka.
The Rotarians also partnered with UWA for a joint activity to save environment around Mulago Hospital.
The Rotarians befriended one of the mountain gorillas that was named 'Rotary'.
