Nokia empowers local developers with platform

KAMPALA, UGANDA -  Nokia is encouraging local IT enthusiasts to develop applications for free to be used on mobile companies Ovi Store.
The Nokia Communications Manager from East and Central Africa, Ms Dorothy Ooko who was in Uganda recently to meet with various developers, said countries within the region had a huge potential of developing applications.
"We as the vendors in the market need applications for users to download and use, however we do  not get as many applications as the developers in Uganda," Oooko says.
She noted the main challenge for developers was monetisation. However despite the challenge, Nokia's Ovi Store would be a platform that could help the developers monetise their applications.
Mobile phone vendors like Nokia are now facing stiff competition from other vendors like Samsung and Apple, this means the company has to encourage innovation on a continent where it is still the market leader.
Developers have to be relevant to the market to meet the needs of the ever demanding user. Once the developer has finished his application, then they can send it to the Nokia and when it passes the various test runs, it will be placed on the Ovi-store for users. This is where Nokia comes in to monetise the application.
However developers who talked to East African Business Week said by the time they develop an application someone already has something similar.
"I had wanted to build an application that can help ease of access with Facebook, Twitter and news but then I realised there was a much powerful application already and that was Snaptu," one developer said.
