Easter: Is it all about merry making or the resurrection?

The wood, the thorns, the nails. One man, one cross, one death that made all the difference in the world. That was the design of Christ's death- to destroy the sins of every man, once for all, and that through His one death, our lives could be free from the bondage of sin and the eternal condemnation of sin.
Christ's sin-conquering death was just Friday. There was Sunday too, the Easter morning, the morning of his life-saving resurrection. This is what Easter is all about- from a Christian perspective at least.
However, the contrasts that lie in the ways in which Easter is celebrated in the world today seem to be drifting further apart with each passing year.
It seems that somewhere along the way we have lost Easter. Maybe it's not so much that it has been lost but replaced with some other counterfeit holiday.
The Easter we now celebrate in our culture is all about Easter bunnies, baskets, chocolate eggs and most of all, too much merry making. Unfortunately the Easter holiday has become so commercialized and is thus politically correct to say we have lost the true meaning of Easter.
To the socialites in Uganda however, a number of activities for revelers to celebrate the 'resurrection' are always lined up in various areas, most of them on the beaches.
This Easter was no exception. Right from the Kampala Taxi Parks that were bustling with alot activity, taxis were making a killing as almost all roads led to the various Entebbe beaches. Some touts even called out 'Bend over, bend over', referring to the show that had captured headlines in the weeks leading up to Easter.
The traffic jam was as usual thick (though many people had gone upcountry 'for' Easter).
Several people attended mass while others, "had over prayed," referring to Good Friday prayers and the Sunday prayers.
Pastor Robert Kamanda of the Amen commission church says that Easter is a time to wake up and renew the great commission. The great commission is the work that Jesus put upon all Christians to go out into the world and spread the good news.
"This is a time when we need to re-awaken ourselves and give purpose to the death and resurrection of Christ. We need to evaluate ourselves and go out and spread the message with renewed vigor," he said.
He admitted that Easter had become so commercialized that the true essence of the day had eventually disappeared.
