Through the NAEB project called, "Rwanda Cup of Excellence," out of 189 samples that were brought to the competition,132 samples qualified for the International jury.
"The Coffees brought to such competitions are cupped to eliminate poor quality ones," Kanyankore said.
The Country grows Arabica coffee on its mountainous slopes, the sector engages more than 70% of the population, mainly in the rural areas.
The objective of Rwanda Cup of Excellence is to make the coffee farmers aware required standards of the coffee beans expected in International markets.
Another objective is to have their coffee auctioned and usually they get a price higher than they will normally get.
The Rwanda Cup Excellence is a yearly competition that began in the country in 2008. In order to increase production and quality of coffee, the new agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Agricultural Export Board, has strategies to success. According to its report, coffee washing stations will be increased from 200 to 220 this year. Also farmers will be educated the kind of coffee that will be needed in International markets
The Target is to increase the quantity of coffee to 35,000tons a year by 2012,which will fetch about 90million dollars, according to NAEB strategic plan..
Last year 2010 the production went down from 26000tons to 20,000tons because the country was experiencing drought. This time the Minister of Agriculture, Agnes Kalibata said that the government has invested millions of dollars in irrigation.
Agriculture experts believe that Rwanda will manage tohit the targets in production and quality of coffee among other crops since the government has several strategies. "Since coffee brings us the most money, it is imperative that the government mobilize the human resource in coffee business,"Musafiri a coffee dealer.
