Tanzania set for mass house sale

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania - The National Housing Corporation (NHC) has announced the sale of 118 new houses at Kinondoni Hananasifu beginning April 23.

According to, the NHC Business Development Director, David Shambwe, the houses have been built under the project titled Eco Residence.

The Director said that a total of Tsh20 billion (about $12.25 million) was spent on building them.

“We used such amount of money, because we also constructed some other social services to the would-be residents such as a gym, a restaurant and shops,” he said.

He said the houses would be sold at between Tsh199 million ($121,861.63) and Tsh253 million ($154, 929.61) exclusive of VAT.

“We also plan to offer a discount of six per cent of the payment which the customer is supposed to pay, if the customer will pay the whole money before June this year,” Shambwe said.

He said the houses would be sold at various prices, but all have been constructed with international standards to provide both comfort and enjoyment to the occupants. The area is expected to accommodate at least 1,000 residents.

He said, “We came up with five different designs models in our construction to give our buyers, both the middle and low income earners a choice in purchasing these units.”

He said NHC has also managed to raise Tsh45billion ($27million) from the sales of various houses that have so far been bought. He said their target is to construct 15,000 houses by 2015.

This will substantially improve the country’s housing sector and reduce on the current shortage throughout the country.

Shambwe said NHC also has a project which involves building houses and selling them off to Tanzanians who can afford to pay for them within three months.

In 2013, October NHC cautioned Tanzanians who want to buy its houses to follow procurement procedures including making payments through selected banks instead of using middlemen.

Shambwe was recently launching the sale campaign for 406 affordable houses in the project dubbed ‘My House-My life’ to be carried out in eleven regions across the country.

“I would like to alert our customers to avoid using middle-men or even think that because they know an NHC staff member they can get some leeway. All sales will observe required procedures and not otherwise,” he said.

Shambwe said the NHC procedure is to sell one house to one person to give ownership opportunity to all in need.
