Coca cola brings samba to Uganda
KAMPALA, UGANDA - During the Special World Cup Opening celebration at Sheraton Hotel last week, coca cola Uganda created a Brazilian mood at the function through decorations on every table that were in form of football pitches with miniature balls.
The celebration kicked off with talented dancers who thrilled the guests with the Samba dance that originates from Brazil before the exclusive screening event which was was attended by 400 guests who included several dignitaries, local football players, and members of the media.
There were some dancers on the stage, clad in vibrant colours, in the spirit of host country, Brazil. They even performed to the official World Cup song (We Are One – Pitbull ft. Jennifer Lopez & Claudia Leitte), to which the guests applauded with gusto.
Welcoming guests to the Brazilian themed event, Brandon Semanda, Brand Manager, Coca-Cola Uganda spoke of the company’s historic association with sports – the platform that has secured Coca-Cola’s position as a supporter of national and global sports events, including the FIFA World Cup.
“From COPA Coca-Cola which supports development of football talent at the national, grassroots level to the biggest sporting event in the world, Coca-Cola continues to show its commitment to both the nurturing and showcasing of football talent. Our company’s commitment to the celebration of football is the reason we are here today; joining the rest of the world to launch the 2014 FIFA World Cup games.”
Semanda also said the Company was holding the first ever, global camp for the 2014 COPA Coca-Cola Youth Football tournament. Top youth players from various countries are in Brazil for this once in a lifetime experience, which included attending the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup games in Brazil. Marvin Oshaba, team captain of last year’s COPA Cola Ugandan team is representing Uganda at the global camp. Marvin and his team won silver at last year’s camp, recording the best performance by a Ugandan team in the history of the tournament.
He also announced that live viewings of select World Cup matches will be held across several venues in the country, which include; Mbarara, Mbale, Gulu, Hoima, and Kampala, where the final game will be screened. Viewing of the matches will be free for all members of the public.
There was a scrumptious buffet just before the opening ceremony. There was a giant tent with screens at either end. There were tables for every country that was represented at the World Cup, with tiny flags planted in turf as the centerpiece of every single table.
Performances from various local artistes like Cindy and Myko Ouma kept guests entertained throughout the evening.
