Rwanda emphasis on agriculture will boost the economy

Editor,

In the Rwanda national budget read out last week, it was stated that 14% of total resources will go to rural development. This makes sense, because agriculture remains the country’s economic mainstay.

The government plans to improve land use, increase agriculture productivity and provide better infrastructure. I subscribe to the belief that when you improve the lives of rural people, then urban people can make more money. So all this sounds good to me.

Most of the population of Rwanda about 80% are mainly rural people who depend on agriculture.

This means that problems farmers face most especially post harvest challenges can be dealt with. Farmers will be able to gain income with less waste and more processing.

As a country gets more from agriculture output, the economic growth will be higher.  Then other sectors can gradually thrive because of the increasing economic linkages that develop.
