Miner gives $800,000

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania - Ta Mantra Tanzania Limited (Mantra), a company focused on the potential development of a Uranium Mining in the country has this year invested $800,000 for anti- poaching activities.

The Tanzania government is seeking international assistance in the fight against rampant poaching in national parks and other protected areas.

Its efforts convinced the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism last week to sign a a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mantra Tanzania Limited.

The agreement means both sides will cooperate in the fight against elephant poaching in the southern parts of the Selous Game Reserve.

Tourism minister, Lazaro Nyalandu and Chief Executive Officer of Uranium One Inc. company, Chris Sattler signed the document.

The Mkuju river project involves an estimated 119.4 million pounds (54,159 tons) of uranium.

Elephant poaching has reached a serious proportions in the Selous Game Reserve. “Mantra is to actively take effective measures to deal with the problem,” Sattler said.

Last year Mantra Tanzania received an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) certificate, from the National Environmental Management Council for its Mkuju uranium project.

The company’s Executive Director, Asa Mwaipopo said it would take about two years to complete construction work for the project.

Mantra management is working with the Wildlife Division with the intention of preserving the elephant herds.
