KISUMU, KENYA - Efforts to conserve Lake Victoria have resumed in earnest following the launch of the second phase of Lake Victoria Environment Management Project (LVEMP II).
The project worth $252 million was officially launched last week with great optimism that it would stem Lake Victoria’s dwindling fortunes, which have left Africa’s largest fresh water lake struggling for survival. The eight-year project will be implemented through four main components including: strengthening institutional capacity for managing shared water and fisheries resources; point source pollution control and prevention; watershed management; and, project coordination and management.
Lake Victoria is grappling with a myriad of challenges from massive pollution, encroachment and the hyacinth. |
