Rwanda IT to ease customs

KIGALI, RWANDA -  Rwanda has launched a pilot web-based system aimed at speeding up customs procedures thus facilitating growth of international trade.
The Electronic Single Window (ESW) system aims at facilitating international trade by expediting and simplifying information flow between traders and government institutions in such a way that information and administrative requirements for imports and exports only need to be submitted once at a single entry point via the Internet.
Rwanda becomes the first country in Sub Saharan Africa to have such a system, according to Trade and Industry Minister François Kanimba.
The Rwandan officials believe that the system will help save time due to improved efficiency of processing and handling information between  stakeholders involved in clearing goods.
"For example, a clearing agent will no longer need to physically take documents from one agency to another for processing but simply fill in necessary information on the web page," a statement from Rwanda Revenue Authority(RRA), said.
The system will be using ASYCUDA World, a combination of customs management system and integrated border management system developed by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (United Nations UNCTAD) agency.

Solange, I'm interested in your work in Rwanda, as an information professional working with Johns Hopkins University. Could I "interview" you on skype or via email? I'm particularly interested in knowledge management through existing libraries and health facilities, training institutions and government agencies in Rwanda and Burundi. My background is as a research librarian in USA and in Bangladesh where we actually did have a great deal of information exchange and new ways of training "librarians."
