EDITOR––Starting a one stop border post and 24/7 operations at Gatuna in Rwanda and Katuna on the Uganda side is welcome though it has taken long.
These border points are critical as they connect to the Northern corridor from Mombasa via Kampala to Katuna and the Central corridor from Dar es Salaam through Rusumo.
It is estimated 100 trucks, 25 personal and tourists’ vehicles and 12 regional passenger buses are handled at Gatuna and Katuna borders daily.
Likewise the traffic is increasing, from less than 500 passengers to averagely 2,300 people daily.
However, the infrastructure at the borders is still poor and services are slow during peak hours that the traveling public and transporters have to queue.
Therefore my humble request to both the Uganda and Rwanda governments is to develop infrastructure to handle the volume of cargo and passengers at the borders.
The Ugandan side should expand their immigration offices, increase the number of counters to handle departures (exiting) and entries.
Without expanding the office, there are hopelessly long queues at immigration offices and unnecessary delays at the Gatuna/Katuna borders.
